WALKAWAY by Corey Doctorow
I came to Walkaway totally blind. I did not know the author, the book's premise, nor had paid any attention to stars or reviews. It was merely suggested when the book I wanted to checkout was unavailable at my local library.
So...I managed the first chapter and part of the second before I became annoyed at the cardboard cutout characters spouting the author's philosophy in monologue after monologue. There was no true dialog. Every word spoken was the author's. Even the counter-arguments. Perhaps the ideas might have been interesting, but, certainly not as presented. Perhaps with characters with distinct voices.
And, everything was so easy for the characters. No tension. No urgency to act. Little was organic. If something happened it was because the author wanted it so. I felt no need to know what happened next, or why. I was not intrigued because I had nothing to figure out. I knew the author would tell me soon enough. I grew weary of being told everything. It is rule #3b for writers - "Show don't tell".
There is little to the "story" and what little there is is not well written. And, it is surprisingly poorly edited. Nothing at all to recommend this title.
